Don’t break the bank for quality images

Not everyone can afford to hire a professional photographer or set up their own promotional photo shoot. The problem is that stock images can be expensive and often look bland or cheesy. Fortunately in recent years there has been a big increase in image libraries that not only provide good, quirky, realistic images but they are completely free to use. We’ve put together six of the best to help you illustrate your marketing with good, attention-grabbing pics.

The Pixabay website contains more than 1.3 million original and creative images shared by an online community of photographers, designers and illustrators. Photographic images, illustrations, vector images and even videos are available for use free of charge. As with many free image sites, all the images are released under Creative Commons CC0 – a set of licences that allows you to use them without asking permission or crediting the artist. As with most stock libraries you can search the images using keywords.

Negative Space

Images showing everything from architecture and lifestyle to technology or science are included on Negative space. New pics are added regularly. The pictures are well categorised and you can filter through them using keywords or even colours. prides itself on not being a typical stock photography site. The images are well categorised and easily searchable. Hundreds of images are added every week and you’ll find a great variety of image styles and subjects.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, check out this library featuring the work of Ryan Maguire, a creative visual artist from New York. From quirky animal shots like cats in spacesuits and flying whales to highly original landscape and lifestyle photography, this is a great site if you want to find unique and memorable visual art.

Unsplash is another image resource that specialises in the unusual and different – you’re unlikely to find bland, smiling telephone operators or cheesy business handshakes here. Striking images are supplied and made available by photographers from around the world.

New Old Stock

Need something a bit retro or vintage? Try New Old Stock. Vintage photographs from public archives that are free from any known copyright restrictions. There are some beautiful vintage images here but it might take a while to scroll through them to find exactly what you’re looking for.
