How to Print and Bind your own Paperback Book « Back to list

how to print book, how to bind book, print book, bind bookHave you recently gone through the painstaking process of writing a report, a magazine, an instructional manual or some other form of reference material? We salute you – but your work doesn’t finish there. Before any paperback book is complete, it first needs to be printed and bound effectively. Therefore, in this post, DigitalPrinting.co.uk shows you exactly how to print and bind your own paperback book.

What are the different types of paperback book binding?

At DigitalPrinting.co.uk, we offer three distinct types of book binding, namely: saddle stitching, perfect binding and wire binding. Each have their own unique characteristics which help to accommodate varying requirements.

Saddle stitching is a cost-effective and simple binding method for documents up to 48 pages. Most commonly used for reports a brochures, it gives you a professional finish with sharp, vibrant colour at a reasonable price.

Perfect binding is used for documents, such as magazines and annual reports, that are too thick to be saddle stitched. In our opinion, this is the most professional binding method as a result of the glossy and sophisticated end result that it achieves.

Wire binding is typically used for instructional manuals and other reference material because of the way pages can lie flat and fold fully back around. It’s perfect for documents anywhere between 4 and 180 pages long, making it an ever-popular binding choice.

In the following sections, we’ll explain how each binding method is carried out to ensure the perfect end product.

How to saddle stitch a paperback book

  1. Collect up to 48 printed pages
  2. Fold pages in half to create multiples of 4
  3. Staple pages together along the spine of the book
  4. Square off the spine of books with more than 24 pages to avoid them springing open

How to perfect bind a paperback book

  1. Collect from 40 to 700 printed pages
  2. Bind pages together using an adhesive along the spine, preferably PUR glue as opposed to traditional hot melt glue
  3. Crease the cover 7mm from the spine to create a hinge that protects the glued edge

How to wire bind a paperback book

  1. Collect from 4 to 180 printed pages
  2. Punch holes along the spine of each printed page
  3. Insert a metal wire spine into each of the punched holes ensuring that pages can lie flat and fold fully back around
